Baseline or Bust: Transition Game

Overview

This drill teaches transition decision-making and how to create and use a numbers-up advantage. Coaches should emphasize recognizing the transition moment, using width through outlets, and creating depth with purpose to stretch the defense.

Game Transfer

This connects directly to transition moments in games, especially when possession changes quickly. Players must learn how to expand the field, make fast decisions, and exploit overloads before the defense can recover and reorganize.

Coaching Takeaway

Controlling the chaos of transition is only effective if players recognize it early and act with a plan. Be clear about what you expect in those moments — what the player who won the ball should look for, where the first pass should go, how quickly players should move, and how they create space for each other. Step in when players miss the moment, and reinforce when they get it right. Don’t just run the drill — coach the decisions that define it.

The Women’s Side of Sport

Most coaches don’t struggle with what to run. They struggle with knowing if it’s actually working. And so we all look for new drills, new ideas, new ways to coach the same defensive things.

That’s where reflection changes everything.
