Overview
This drill teaches 1v1 Defense. Coaches should emphasize the approach, shaping, and how to disrupt the attacker.
Game Transfer
This connects to all defensive play, as 1v1 defense happens all over the field. Shaping the play is important to understand while executing a press, and stepping to ball in both transition to defense and recovery defense.
Coaching Takeaway
Remember that we have to tell and show our players exactly what we are looking for if we want them execute it correctly. So make sure you know it and are prepared to demonstrate and deliver it. Then be sure to step in and correct if the group is executing incorrectly, and pull individuals aside if you notice trends in their play. Be sure to do more than just run the drill – be sure to manage the decisions within them.
The Women’s Side of Sport
Most coaches don’t struggle with what to run. They struggle with knowing if it’s actually working. And so we all look for new drills, new ideas, new ways to coach the same defensive things.
That’s where reflection changes everything.
